HISTORY OF CHS Colerain Centralized Township School opened in September 1924. In the April 26th, 1924 Hamilton Journal Newspaper there was an entire page given to the history of the many one and two room schools that had served the area. The following article about the old Colerain High School and Barnesburg School were taken from the paper. In future editions we hope to also write the histories of Peach Grove, Cliptown, Groesbeck, Dunlap, Blue Rock, Dry Ridge, and Old Round Top Schools. Editors note: The actual sentences and grammar are exactly as it appeared in the Hamilton Journal of April 26th, 1924. OLD COLERAIN HIGH Colerain High School is located at the Colerain Pike, 2 miles north of Groesbeck. The school yard corners with the round top district school yards. It is almost the central position in the township. This has been a high school for eighteen years, 11 years was a 2 year course, and the past seven years there has been a year course. During these eighteen years but three teachers have taught there. T. M. Taylor, C.A. Struble, and H.E. Taylor. About 80 pupils have been graduated from Colerain High, 60 are now enrolled coming from all the districts of the township, two trucks furnish the transportation. C.W. Burdsall and Mr. Guntzweiler are the careful drivers. Colerain High claims championship soccer ball team of Hamilton County. The claims are organized and are all in a flourishing condition financially. The athletes are being organized and practice games are being played each day and when this school gets into there new home, the different teams will surely turn there opportunities into account. These young people are energetic and wide awake, and there are athletic victories of great comment, and contribute in no small degree to the ultimate success of there school life. The "Pep" meetings which have been held each week thru the past year deserve special mention. The credit of these interesting and entertaining Wednesday morning meetings should be given to Marie Frey (sophomore) at whose suggestions we started. This school house with the other schools in the district will be sold. Barnesburg School The building that served Barnesburg District as a school room over 80 years is still a good building. It was built on land belonging to the Barnes Family. It was a one room log structure and 76 years ago when J.J. Livingston was the teacher followed by Samual Hammitt, the enrollment of the school was 100 pupils, the desks were without backs and were not fastened to the floor just benches of various sizes that might be easily moved around. On cold days the little children were allowed to sit nearest the stove, and when any were absent their benches were stacked in the corner to get the benefit of the space. When all were present the aisles were just about 2 feet wide. Pupils from 4 to 24 attended some coming 6 miles. Mr. Agen, Abram Goady, and Royal Struble were also teachers in the old building. John Davis was one of the pupils of the old school who became a teacher. Mrs. Serepta Johnson attended this school 75 years ago. After this building did service for about 50 years as a school room, it was remodeled into a 5 room dwelling without enlarging it any, and sold to a Frenchmen who with his family made it there home for many years. Late he sold it to Mr. Oehler the general merchant. Mr. Oehler now uses it as one of his ware rooms and as stated in the beginning it is in sound condition. 35 years or ago or less the present two room school house was built. Some of the teachers serving an this building are James G. Keeling, J. Willey, Charles Mountville Flowers, George Hecht, Mr. Craig, John Hammitt, Estella Struble, Shirley Ryan, Minnie Kaup, Charles Kaup, Clara Wagner, Anna Geigle, Perry Brestel, and Mrs. Joyce. Miss Weigle and Mrs. Joyce are the present teachers. Mrs. Ada Johnson, Miss Anna Weigle, Miss Amelia Heide, Minnie Kaup, and Jesse Van Ausdal are some of the pupils of this school who became teachers. William Johnson served overseas in the World War. Stanley Van Pelt is a prominent M.D.. These are only a "few of the many" from this school who are prominent. Helen and Blanche Craig attend Colerain High School and Hazel Johnson is attending Ohio State University in Columbus. |

ALUMNI MEETING CHATTER
Dear Chatter, Please keep me on your mailing list. I love receiving Chatter and reading it front to back. Fr. Tom Beischel '44 Dayton OH Hi Chatter, Really enjoyed reading the notes of the Alum across America in the last issue of Chatter. I am enclosing a check to help keep the memories and the Chatter alive. Howard Thie '44 Cincinnati OH Colerain Chatter, Last year I wrote a letter to the Chatter giving my background after graduation. I preference the latter in for humor and irony of the fact my class prophesy in the yearbook suggested that I would end up at Sixth and Vine Streets selling pencils for a living. I ended the letter by stating that I would be a Texas Millionaire in the future. I was able to attend my class reunion held in September along with Class 1950 through 1954. I was amazed that so many people attending the reunion had read my comments in the Chatter and spoke to me about what I said. My sister Lila Handley, Class of 1946 attended another reunion of the classes of 1946 through 1949, and she also was approached by many concerning my comments in the Chatter. This would document that Colerain graduates do indeed read the Chatter. So keep up the good work. Charles Cox '50 Friendswood TX Colerain Alumni Association, In confirmation of a conversation you had with our Board Chairman, Leroy Meier, I have enclosed Arlington's ad copy for the Colerain Alumni Newsletter and our check for one hundred dollars. If you have any questions call me at Arlington. Thanks to Leroy Meier '52 Cincinnati OH for the donation. Alumni Association Live in Port Huron MI and I would really like to hear from my "67" classmates. I went to the 25th reunion and saw my friends from school. It was great seeing everyone. There was one person I didn't get to see, and that was Chuck Bledsoe. I hope maybe if he gets the newsletter that he will write me and all my fellow classmates. Debbie Woodrum Stewart '67 Port Huron MI 48060, 1-810-985-7061 Dear Colerain Alumni Association, I want to say how much I have enjoyed receiving the Chatter over the years. It was especially kind of you to send it all the way to Japan while I was living there. I have enclosed a donation, as well as my new address. My husband and I are once again back in the states, and have settled in Colorado. My new address is 185 Cedar Lane East, Ridgeway Colorado, 81432. Thanks very much. Dixie Pottenger Bergman '67 Ridgeway CO Alumni Association, Enclosed is our contribution to the Alumni Association. Keep up the good work. Listed below is an announcement that I would like to have printed in the newsletter. My family and I are very proud of my husband's achievements and it is certainly worth mentioning. Congratulations to Kurt Schulze '68 on having been recently named Mills Division Director for Smurfit Carton y Papel de Mexico. Smurfit is one of the largest paper and packaging companies with facilities throughout the world. Kurt, a graduate of Miami University's Pulp & Paper School is based in Mexico City and along with his wife, Bonnie Sweeney '68 have resided in Mexico for 10 years. Prior to that they lived in Venezuela for 10 years. They have two daughters, Kelly 21 and Kristen 19, both of whom attend Auburn University in Alabama. Again, I would really appreciate your cooperation in this matter. Thanks and best regards, Bonnie Schulze Sweeney '68 Clearwater FL To whom it may concern, I am curious as to why you listed the names of the alumni cheerleaders and Rhythmettes but not the band members in your November 1997 issue. Since there are many more alumni band members, there is also a greater interest in them. Don't forget that band was important enough to be an accredited subject unlike cheerleading. Sincerely Irene McFarland Dick '68 Fairfield CA Editors note: No band list was provided by the people who organized the alumni band. We would certainly have listed, as we have done in past newsletters, all alumni band members who participate in Alumni Night. We hope more alumni band members participate! Please put in Chatter, Mark '69 and Kim Reller '75, 1092 SW Westwood Dr, Portland OR 97201. E-mail Reller M@OHSU.EDU. Mark '69 & Kim Reller '75 Portland OR Dear Alumni, I have just recently received my mailing of the Chatter, and I want to thank you. My letter requesting the Chatter was in the issue which generated a call from one of my old high school friends Tex Mistak. It was fantastic hearing his voice and learning about his life after high school days. I have the chatter to thank for this reunion. Thanks so much and keep sending my copies. Best regards. Bonnie Castleberry Bockstanz '69 Deford MI. Dear Colerain Alumni magazine publishers, Thank you for continuing to send us your magazine. It always good to catch up on what's going on in Cincinnnati. We've moved, so would like to give you our new address. Just to fill you in what's happening in our corner of the globe... Larry's business, "The Impress Media Group" has enjoyed incredible growth. It's keeping up with the business that is the challenge these days. We are very proud to announce the birth of our son, Maxwell Robert, born 7th June 1997. He is an active, alert, happy little person, who has brought untold joy into our lives. We look forward to our next visit to Cincinnati to show off our pride and joy. Until then, we will enjoy our new home, which is something of a dream come true, as it is situated on the Brisbane River, overlooking the golf course and river to the mountains beyond. All the best to you Larry, Anne and Max Ludwig '75 Karana Downs QLD Australia I hope to be able to donate more in the future. I truly enjoy receiving the Chatter. I have many memorable years associated with Colerain of which I cherish deeply. I enjoyed my high school years and hope other students can cherish those same memories in years to come. Our 6 year old son BO was diagnosed with Leukemia in October of 1996. He is doing well but continues weekly chemo treatments until Feb. of 1999. As you can imagine this has put a great financial strain on our family. We have two girls also ages 4 &2. Therefore I hope to give more to the Colerain Alumni Asso. in the future. Thank you for many fond memories and updates on old classmates. Thanks for all your hard work. Great Job! Sandy MacDonald Everett '78 Palm Harbor FL It seems you lost me! Everyone I work with can't believe the amount of time and energy a high school alumni association puts forth to reach out to all its graduates. It is great reading up on all the people I know ( and don't know)! I would like to fill you in briefly on myself. After graduating from U.C. College of Pharmacy, I moved to Dayton Oh. I began work at a level one trauma hospital, Miami Valley Hospital, as a staff pharmacist and have been there ever since. I am on my second marriage to a terrific guy named Tim Moorman who is a self employed home builder. I have two step daughters who are ages 14 and 10. They live in Chicago and we don't see them nearly enough. I just had my first child on July 25th, 1997. His name is Benjamin Timothy and he is the apple of my eye. I hope others will write to the Chatter and send a donation to keep this terrific service going. Teresa Berning Moorman '85 Dayton OH Dear Colerain Alumni, A few of us have moved since our last reunion. Knowing that our 10 year is coming up, I am sending a few address updates.
